For me, as a mother, it is important to teach and demonstrate the importance of kindness and empathy. But also to be honest and normalise the fact that we all experience the effects of unkind behaviours throughout our lives.
Creating this book was to take my children, and all of its readers, on the journey of its main character having his balloon deflated by unkind words and finding a way to fill it back up again.
My daughter’s simple illustrations demonstrate how we might feel sad and alone after someone hurts our feelings, amplified by any invalidation we may experience when wanting to express ourselves. But the words and images in the story dance along together to remind us that there is always hope.
